29 yo female.
Ruptured R tendon 8 June 2004.
Playing 2nd game of netball for the night.
Misdiagnosed as a sprain & told to go home & massage my leg. I asked for a second opinion & after 2 hours was diagnosed correctly.
Operated on 9 June. Foot cast in pointed position.
Cast for 10 weeks. Every 2 weeks cast was removed, foot flexed more & recast.
Physio told me I should have been put in an air boot right after surgery & I could have started physio immediately (rather than 10 weeks later). Found physio a lot more helpful than doc. Physio 3x week for about 3 months & haven't looked back.
3.5 years on, I'm back playing netball/running/everything I used to do. No pain but I am a little less flexible in my right calf.

Rupture on May 14th 2009

59 year old male
Postman...fairly active due to job
At time of rupture doing nothing other than removing my slippers to put on shoes. Initially the injury was due to injury at work, before xmas 2008, when impact occurred immediately above heel. Further weakening happened over the next 4/5 months before tendon snapped.
Treated conservatively with plaster cast for one month, followed by air boot for further month...ongoing.

Post subject: achilles rupture Reply with quote

Female: 41
Ruptured my achilles tendon 4 weeks ago playing squash.
Conservative method recommended to me.
Am currently in a below knee cast - not sure what they are going to do when I go back next week. I am going to push for a boot. Seems most people recommend them.
Absolutely hate this injury!

Sex: Male
Age: 38 yrs
Injury: Partial tear to left
Activity: Running (for a late appointment - flat shoes)
Location: UK
Injury date: 5 Jun 2010
Treatment: Conservative (was given option of surgery)
Treatment date: 6 June 2010

Half cast (foot at 30 deg) for 1 week, followed by aircast for 6 weeks (movement restricted to 15-45 deg for 2 weeks and then 0-45 deg for 4 weeks). Physio started when aircast came off. Given exercises and told not to use crutches whenever possible. After one week I was walking without a limp and started driving again.

Re: surgery vs conservative. I was worried that I had made the wrong choice in not having surgery. However, the ortho consultant reassured me that I had made the right decision. Now two months post-injury, I really do believe that I made the right decision.
