Post subject: Conservative rupture in plaster for 12 weeks?? Reply with quote

Partly (one third approx) ruptured my achilles playing tennis after a break of many years, it was a classic 'thought I'd been shot of the back of the leg' so I went straight to A&E. Had a temporary cast and then a fibreglass 4 days later. I was pretty sure the consultant I saw said 6 weeks (in total) in plaster, they gave me an appointment for 3 weeks time when I thought my foot would start to be angled back to normal prior to plaster removal and physio. When I went to the hospital at 3 weeks however, the (different) consultant said 12 weeks (in total) in plaster and no foot angle change for 6 weeks! This seems a bit excessive to me, I had a rupture in my other leg 7 years ago (admittedly not as bad) in France and all they did was strap the leg with a rubber bandage and put me on crutches for 3 weeks prior to physio. I suppose I am older, heavier and have a more serious rupture, but 12 weeks is going to be a nightmare - should I get a second opinion?

Hi

How are things going? Sorry no one is around to keep you company on here.

I know nothing about partial ruptures so had been hoping others would respond.

Paul

Hi just popped back on here. I had a partial rupture apparently it was hanging by a thread. I had the plaster cast on for 10 weeks and the angle was changed towards the end . I have been out of plaster for about a year now and can run etc but I was lucky to have rehab after to get the spring back into my leg. Looking back I think maybe a walking boot would have been better but hindsight is a good thing and at the time just accepted whatever was said to me. Good luck with it all. Please feel free to ask me anything
