This morning I went down to the river Aire at Denso Marston Nature Reserve to listen to some of the dawn chorus. The usual culprits were belting it out – Robin, Wren, Blackbird, Blackcap etc. as were quite a few Song Thrush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am surprised that any of these are recognisable. The light was poor, they were handheld and for an 800mm lens the shutter speeds were ridiculously long. The Robin, taken at 5:40am was 1\/8s, f:9.5 3200ISO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Treecreeper, taken at 5:28, has a ring on its leg. With there being very little light the camera struggled to focus and I struggled to find the birds in the trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had to focus manually and then, if the viewfinder showed that the camera had found<\/em> the bird, I could use auto-focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had my camera with me because I half hoped to be able to stay out a while, at least until there was a decent amount of light. But it started raining and breakfast seemed like a good idea.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

If you are using a phone the caption can take up most of the space of the thumbnail so you might find it easier to turn your phone to landscape to open the gallery. I am hoping to change that for the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
