Tadpoles in the pond. Grey Wagtail chicks being fed, though there doesn’t look to be much nutrition in what looks to be fly wings and legs. Yummy!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Monday Morning<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The second trip, on Monday 5 May, was an early one. The Blackbirds in our garden had been singing well in the mornings so I went down just after 5:00 to listen on the reserve. I thought that I would stay out for a while so I had my camera with me. At 5:20 the light was not good but I still took some photos, not expecting any of them to be usable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The photo of the Robin particularly impressed me about the camera and lens. It was taken at 5:40 and the bird was tucked away in the bushes. I had to do most of the focusing manually. The lens was at maximum stretch of 800mm and f:9.5. I have the camera limited to a maximum ISO of 3200 so this resulted in a shutter speed of 1\/8s. 1\/8s at 800mm handheld!! The old rule for 35mm full frame cameras used to be to use a shutter speed of 1 over the focal length of the lens. So that would be 1\/800s. This is a crop-sensor camera so it should really be 1\/(800 x 1.6)=1\/1280s. This shot was possible because of the optical stabilisation of the lens, the camera In Body Image Stabilising (IBIS) and taking multiple shots. Most were very blurred but one was taken at just the right steady hand<\/em> moment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

If you are using a phone the caption can take up most of the space of the thumbnail so you might find it easier to turn your phone to landscape to open the gallery. I am hoping to change that for the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
