So this last weekend I went up around Glovershaw and Golcar Farms, the north west corner of the moor. And I wasn&#8217;t disappointed, even if I did get wet on Saturday. Earlier it had been a bright day but soon after getting there on Saturday afternoon it clouded over and started to rain.<\/p>\n<p>There are several distinctive sounds to listen for over on that part of the moor (and the list gets longer as I think about, it but I&#8217;ll limit it to the first few I thought of)<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Curlew in flight\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/34444370240\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4195\/34444370240_6531ab0e96_z.jpg\" alt=\"Curlew in flight\" width=\"640\" height=\"503\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Curlew landing\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/34444369760\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4168\/34444369760_f8915eca2d_z.jpg\" alt=\"Curlew landing\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Curlew with their eerie call as they drift in to land as per the two photos above.<\/p>\n<p>You can often here the same sound on programs like Heartbeat and similar.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Lapwing\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/34790823566\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4182\/34790823566_0307b3968c_z.jpg\" alt=\"Lapwing\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lapwing can be seen in the meadows keeping an eye on their young&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Lapwing chick\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/34830802215\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4175\/34830802215_ae97eff3d6_z.jpg\" alt=\"Lapwing chick\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>tiny brown birds.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Lapwing chick warning\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/34830764725\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4178\/34830764725_1ded2c5d8c_z.jpg\" alt=\"Lapwing chick warning\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and the sign comes out each year<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Lapwing\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/34444371720\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4247\/34444371720_e872766362_z.jpg\" alt=\"Lapwing\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>but if anything approaches their nests they get rather noisy and will dive bomb anything approaching\u00a0calling their &#8220;peewit&#8221; as they wheel about protecting their young<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Snipe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/34444399170\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4163\/34444399170_2f314130d1_z.jpg\" alt=\"Snipe\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Snipe are also around. Note the blurry blob in the foreground for later.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Snipe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/34444390960\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4268\/34444390960_6d7ea814ab_z.jpg\" alt=\"Snipe\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I love the &#8220;chipper, chipper&#8221; noise that Snipe make,<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Redshank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/34020676983\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4196\/34020676983_12e3fcf405_z.jpg\" alt=\"Redshank\" width=\"526\" height=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>but I have recently learnt that the Redhank (above) make a similar noise<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Redshank with chicks\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/34444412680\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4276\/34444412680_14fba95b73_z.jpg\" alt=\"Redshank with chicks\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and the Redshank breed here too.<\/p>\n<p>Other sounds are Pheasant with their squawk and wing flapping and the &#8220;brrmm&#8221; as a car goes over the cattle grid&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Snipe thrumming\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/34698556551\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4158\/34698556551_b9d1076c7f_z.jpg\" alt=\"Snipe thrumming\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Snipe thrumming\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/34444392050\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4171\/34444392050_e151d860a1_z.jpg\" alt=\"Snipe thrumming\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But the two sounds I like to hear most are the song of a Skylark as it ascends to be a tiny dot in the sky (sorry no photos) and the &#8220;thrumming&#8221; of a Snipe&#8217;s dive, as shown above. They fly around and then dive and extend two tail feathers that then thrum quite loudly in the air.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Meadow Pipit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/34698581341\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4182\/34698581341_01b6576cd8_z.jpg\" alt=\"Meadow Pipit\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Meadow Pipit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/34698580041\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4268\/34698580041_15fe18b644_z.jpg\" alt=\"Meadow Pipit\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meadow Pipit are also common, and noisy, on the moor.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Meadow Pipit\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/34790810236\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4247\/34790810236_8860bf9e4a_z.jpg\" alt=\"Meadow Pipit\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In one of the photos of a Snipe shown above there is a blurred brown blob in the foreground. This Meadow Pipit was the brown blob. And the brown blob at the top of this photo is the Snipe.<\/p>\n<p>I mentioned that Lapwing protect their young&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Stoat\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/33987619824\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4176\/33987619824_32c1032ec0_z.jpg\" alt=\"Stoat\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and this is what they have to protect them from. A Stoat. Not forgetting Crows, Magpies, Red Kite, Kestrels, the hooves of cattle etc. etc.<br \/>\nStoats are excellent hunters and I could imagine them easily clearing a field of young Lapwing.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Stoat\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/34698603751\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4221\/34698603751_f42f8aebea_z.jpg\" alt=\"Stoat\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a blurry photo but it looks as though this Stoat have something in its mouth. Note the black end to the tail identifying it as a Stoat and not a Weasel.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Reed Bunting\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/34667483512\/in\/dateposted-public\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-flickr-embed=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/c1.staticflickr.com\/5\/4251\/34667483512_9e31d5ac4e_z.jpg\" alt=\"Reed Bunting\" width=\"640\" height=\"457\" \/><\/a><script async src=\"\/\/embedr.flickr.com\/assets\/client-code.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Reed Bunting were also showing themselves.<\/p>\n<p>As usual you can click on any of the images and view it larger on Flickr.
