{"id":2248,"date":"2018-09-04T14:57:06","date_gmt":"2018-09-04T14:57:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.marfell.me.uk\/wordpress\/?p=2248"},"modified":"2020-09-07T12:30:05","modified_gmt":"2020-09-07T12:30:05","slug":"jenny-lane-tong-park-dam-aug-2018-butterflies-little-grebe-stoat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marfell.me.uk\/wordpress\/jenny-lane-tong-park-dam-aug-2018-butterflies-little-grebe-stoat\/","title":{"rendered":"Jenny Lane &#038; Tong Park Dam, Aug 2018 (Butterflies, Little Grebe &#038; Stoat)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of August 2018 I decided to have a walk around Tong Park Dam and I was very pleased with the Butterflies, Little Grebe, Stoat and Pike I saw.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Painted Lady on Valerian, Jenny Lane\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/43748127924\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1889\/43748127924_f8e89d5b41_c.jpg\" alt=\"Painted Lady on Valerian, Jenny Lane\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the corner of the car park at the end of Jenny Lane was a small Valerian bush which had a surprising number of butterflies on it.<\/p>\n<p>Painted Lady with wings closed.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Painted Lady on Valerian, Jenny Lane\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/30596131718\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1847\/30596131718_c635b2923d_c.jpg\" alt=\"Painted Lady on Valerian, Jenny Lane\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And a Painted Lady with wings open.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Small Tortoiseshell on Valerian, Jenny Lane\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/43748127714\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1858\/43748127714_6360fde01c_c.jpg\" alt=\"Small Tortoiseshell on Valerian, Jenny Lane\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There were probably 8 or so Small Tortoiseshell on the plant. And some on the warm stone wall behind the plant.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Comma butterfly on a over-ripe blackberry\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/43748126894\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1893\/43748126894_e189732445_c.jpg\" alt=\"Comma butterfly on a over-ripe blackberry\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Walking down to Willy Wood there were quite a few Brambles with ripe berries. I sampled a good many of the ripe ones. The flavours varied from simple sweetness to quite tart. This Comma was sampling some of the over-ripe ones.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Red Admiral butterfly on a over-ripe blackberry\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/43556572095\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1851\/43556572095_f317ea5019_c.jpg\" alt=\"Red Admiral butterfly on a over-ripe blackberry\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Red Admirals were also feeding on the over-ripe berries.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Speckled Wood\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/30596130048\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1863\/30596130048_807d9ca0da_c.jpg\" alt=\"Speckled Wood\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Speckled Wood butterflies were also flitting about in the same area.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Blackthorn Sloe berries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/43748127414\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1866\/43748127414_1663da1e15_c.jpg\" alt=\"Blackthorn Sloe berries\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A Blackthorn in the hedgerow had bunches of Sloe berries looking nicely ready for Sloe Gin.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Roots\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/43556572555\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1848\/43556572555_f179086dd5_c.jpg\" alt=\"Roots\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the woods it looked as though water had washed the soil away from around the roots of some of the trees. Quite a tangle.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"G_Ba, part glass bottle\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/29529756417\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1882\/29529756417_9ba482bf27_c.jpg\" alt=\"G_Ba, part glass bottle\" width=\"800\" height=\"502\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the path around the top of Tong Park Dam I spotted one of the old, black, lemonade bottle stoppers. After scraping away the soil I managed to un-earth the neck of a bottle. The moulding on the glass looks like &#8220;G Ba&#8230;&#8221; and the stopper says &#8220;Barraclough, Bradford &amp; Baildon&#8221;. It is most likely that the bottle was for &#8220;G Barraclough&#8221; that had a mineral water factory in Cutler Heights Lane as early as 1830, they later moved to Westgate Hill and currently have a factory off Tong Street. Did the bottles used to get mixed up and used by the different companies?<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Red-Green Carpet moth larva\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/30596129428\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1859\/30596129428_45e3ba1e7d_c.jpg\" alt=\"Red-Green Carpet moth larva\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Coming back around the path I noticed this caterpillar for a Green and Red Carpet moth (Chloroclysta siterata)<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Thistle seed\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/43556570225\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1890\/43556570225_dcfded0e92_c.jpg\" alt=\"Thistle seed\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many of the thistle heads were bursting with seeds but I didn&#8217;t see any flocks of Goldfinch feeding on them. I did hear a few but only in the tops of some of the trees.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Little Grebe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/44466139291\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1857\/44466139291_73ee36b9e2_c.jpg\" alt=\"Little Grebe\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Getting round to where I could better see the water spread out in front of me there were Swans, Mallard, Moorhen but best of all was this Little Grebe.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Little Grebe &amp; Moorhen\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/44466139611\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1895\/44466139611_8914aa1178_c.jpg\" alt=\"Little Grebe &amp; Moorhen\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This adult Moorhen was rather aggressive. I couldn&#8217;t see anything it was protecting. It gently swam towards whatever was the nearest bird and then when it was within a few metres it would speed up and chase them off &#8211; as it did with the Little Grebe.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Juvenile Moorhen\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/30596137568\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1864\/30596137568_e73f5064c8_c.jpg\" alt=\"Juvenile Moorhen\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It also chased off this juvenile Moorhen on more than one occasion.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Little Grebe &amp; Mallard\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/43748128554\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1897\/43748128554_2182bda66d_c.jpg\" alt=\"Little Grebe &amp; Mallard\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The other birds seemed to get on well enough with each other.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Swans\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/43556571735\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1859\/43556571735_ed3a0033af_c.jpg\" alt=\"Swans\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is a shot of the two swans preening after a bit of excitement. At one stage a large dog chased the swans off one of their resting places and as they got away, flapping their wings, every bird around the dam gave off a loud alarm call. The sound was all around me and made me realise that I could only see a small proportion of the birds that were there.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Stoat\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/43748130934\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1873\/43748130934_7c07ed3483_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stoat\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I then saw some movement on the eastern edge of the water. A Stoat.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Stoat\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/30596136338\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1889\/30596136338_3553bd15ff_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stoat\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Stoat disappeared under a tangled mound of soil, roots and metal and then popped out of a hole at the top of the mound and looked around.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Stoat\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/43748129804\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1843\/43748129804_1d8f5a4e31_c.jpg\" alt=\"Stoat\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After quickly looking all around the mound it scampered off around the water&#8217;s edge.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Little Grebe\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/30596135038\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1898\/30596135038_0f0dfaccd5_c.jpg\" alt=\"Little Grebe\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It then seemed that all the Mallards and the Little Grebe turned to the North East corner as if listening to the progress of the Stoat around the edge.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Pike\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/44466136631\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1862\/44466136631_d46df0f66e_c.jpg\" alt=\"Pike\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was about time to be heading home but I then spotted this fish, a Pike? (Edit: I am told that the fish is a Carp.) I would say it was at least 70 cm long (2 1\/2 feet) it looked massive.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Pike\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/44466138951\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1854\/44466138951_9890485b1d_c.jpg\" alt=\"Pike\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I thought Pike tended to be long and thin but this one looks quite chunky to me. (Edit: I am told that the fish is a Carp.) It was just lazily moving around quite close to the surface.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Teasel seed heads\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/43556571475\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1856\/43556571475_aa3915488b_c.jpg\" alt=\"Teasel seed heads\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Around the edge of the water were several Teasels but, again, no Goldfinch feeding.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Tong Park Dam\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/pmarfell\/44466134981\/in\/album-72157700658722074\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1879\/44466134981_b839702634_c.jpg\" alt=\"Tong Park Dam\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A beautiful place.<\/p>\n<p>As usual the image files are on flickr where, after clicking on them, you can see larger versions.
