11th At Ben Rhydding Gravel Pits

These are a few photos from a trip to Ben Rhydding Gravel Pits Local Nature Reserve – facebook Ben Rhydding Gravel Pits. I have decided to not group multiple trips out into one blog post. So more postings should be coming along soon.

Wren, Chiffchaff, Blackcap, Goosander, Dipper, Greylag Goose, rodent bones, Peacock butterfly, Shelduck and Little Egret.

As usual you can tap/touch/click on an image, not its caption, to see it in better quality in the gallery.

BRGP

These are the photos of the things spotted at Ben Rhddying Gravel Pits. Wrens, Robins and Chiffchaffs were being noisy but as usual were tricky to spot. With the Chiffchaff you know it is up in the treee but spotting it can be difficult.

Several Blackcaps were also singing away. They seemed to be much lower in the trees and bushes but still difficult to spot.

Two Dippers seemed to be posing for each other and also looked as though they were nest building.

I found the Owl pellet that I had seen on my previous visit but this time I had my Sigma 105mm Macro lens with me so tried to get some clearer photos of the rodent jaw. I even included a £1 coin for sizing.

When I went back to the car I looked across the road wondering if the Redshank were still there. They weren’t but a pair of Shelduck were.

Little Egret

It was great to see the Blackcap and Shelduck but for me the atar was being able to watch a Little Egret run up and down the river hunting fish. Normally they are easily spooked and fly off. This one was happy to

Running after fish was eventually successful. Perhaps this is the Egret way of feeding. It doesn’t seem as successful as the wy Grey Herons fish. They wait motionless and strike with amazing accuracy. I have also seen Little Egrets at Crag Hebble Dam where they walked about moving there feet around under water to disturb things from the bottom.

If you are using a phone the caption can take up most of the space of the thumbnail so you might find it easier to turn your phone to landscape to open the gallery. I am hoping to change that for the site.
