Another couple of hours down by the river Aire at and around Denso Marston Nature Reserve. Tap on an image, not the caption, to see it better quality.
It was good to get some close sightings of Kingfisher again. The header image shows a Kingfisher catching the sun and behind it is quite dark. Even though I kept looking over in that direction it wasn’t until I heard a splash that I would see the Kingfisher come up out of the water and perch were I could see it. I used my binoculars a few times to look for fish in the water but couldn’t see any, perhaps they preferred to be in the dark under the branches.
I was surprised to see a Swan on the river. I know they do swim on rivers but seldom on this bit of the river Aire.
On the far side of the small pond a Grey Heron was feeding on small fish. This one caught 2 in one strike.
Many male ducks go into eclipse plummage after the breeding season and look the similar to the females, they are also flightless. I had read that male Goosander do something different, they fly off after the breeding season. I am therefore curious as to what is happening with this Goosander. Is it a juvenile starting to get its male plumage or is it a male coming out of eclipse.
