Denso Marston NR. 13 June 2025

On 13 June I went for a walk along the river at Denso Marston Nature Reserve.

The header image is of a Wren spotted on the walk.

As usual you can tap/touch/click on an image, not its caption, to see it in better quality in the gallery. And if you like what you see please click on one or more of the Share buttons at the bottom.

Birds

Every time I get close to a singing Wren it amazes me how such a small bird can blast out at such volume. This one was no exception.

Another surprise is how much a male Mandarin Duck can change. Compare this one with how they looked earlier in the year here

Insects

I have had a look back through my photos of Damselflies and I don’t have many others that I have labelled Blue Tailed Damselfly. This is because I am never sure of an ID so I tend to use a broader category. This is what I have done with the Conopid Fly (Thick-headed flies). I think it is Sicus ferrugineus AKA Ferruginous Bee-grabber but I could be wrong.

If you look at the photos in their gallery you can click on the i to see more information about the photo. This includes the description I have given to a photo. For the Azure Damselflies the description is Azure Damselflies ovipositing at Denso Marston Nature Reserve and for the Mirid Bug it is Grypocoris stysi, Mirid Bug, at Denso.

There is still an amazing number of Ladybird larva, pupa and bugs around. In some places there are several per leaf.

Plants

The leaf cover on the trees now can make it difficult to see birds. It is surprising how birds manage to fly through so fast. Blackbirds, and Wood Pigeons, though they tend to be higher up, fly through at a good speed without seeming to hit anything. To me it looks a tangle.

The Water Soldier in the pond has a few white flowers at the moment, as does the Water Lily.

If you are using a phone the caption can take up most of the space of the thumbnail so you might find it easier to turn your phone to landscape to open the gallery. I am hoping to change that for the site.

And if I have got the ID of anything wrong please let me know, I don’t consider myself an expert but I have write something. It is often a best guess and it would take up too much room to say It could be this, or it could be… or perhaps.
