DMNR Again – 18 May 2026

These are a few new things from Denso Marston Nature Reserve except for the Weevil (Green Nettle Weevil, Phyllobius pomaceus) that is the header image and the Grey Wagtail chick with parent.

Denso Marston Nature Reserve

I snuck out for an hour or so on Monday. It was damp and a lot colder than I had expected when looking out of the window at home but I managed to spot a few new things.

I have seen several varieties of Shieldbug but this is the first time I have seen what I think are Brassica Shieldbug, Eurydema oleracea.

I am not that keen on Spiders so I am not going to spend long looking closely at this one. A couple of searches were suggesting it is some kind of Orb-Weaving Spider.

In the past I have seen tiny black beetles down in Dandelions but these are brown and possibly a Fruitform Beetle of the Byturidae family, Byturus ochraceus or Byturus tomentosus.

The last two beetles are a Rove Beetle and a kind of Soldier Beetle, Cantharis nigricans sp.

The last one is of a Grey Wagtail fledgling with a parent. I was lucky to get this because they were across the other side of the river under shade and by then dark clouds had come over. I also messed up slightly in that the camera was still set to 200ISO for using my macro lens and ring flash for the beetles. 1/125s at 800mm for a bird that is always wagging its tail was not the best of settings.

Please click on the images to take you to better quality images in the carousel gallery where the i will let you see the title, and caption, and some photography info.

It is often a best guess and it would take up too much room to say It could be this, or it could be… or perhaps.
