Tree Walk, Thursday at DMNR

This Thursday I tagged along with the Tree Walk at Denso Marston Nature Reserve. Steve, the warden, is posting something about 1 tree per day this week.

The first tree we had a look at was a large Black Poplar down river past the Buck Lane footbridge, I have used that as the header image. At about the same time a Buzzard flew over being herded out by a couple of Jackdaw.

There is evidence that the air around the reserve is clean – as demonstrated by the numbers of lichen and mosses around. The Capillary Thread Moss (Bryum capillare) looks good when viewed up close through a macro lens.

I am hoping that someone can give me more information about the type of Violets and the beetles we spotted on one of the trees.

One of the small oak trees had a Rams Horn Gall on it, I have included a photo of it and a photo of what the buds would look like if not affected by the Andricus aries wasp.

Apparently the plant that I said was Cowslip in my Birdsong Walk post is actually False Oxslip. Some of the people that go on these walks are very knowledgeable.

The walk was not for tree identification but just a general chat about trees, woodland management, hedge laying, pollarding, coppicing, etc.

I normally add this at the top – please click on an image to see it in its gallery carousel.
