I am thinking of making a small solar powered “fountain” using two urns we have had in the garden for years and on the way to the garden centre I stopped off at High Royds Pond (the link will show other High Royds Pond posts) and walked round it a couple of times, I just happened to have my camera with me.
The header image is a juvenile (I think) Stonechat perched on Phragmites.

The pond is a lot more over-grown than on my previous visits and it is now almost divided into separate areas. There were the usual Black Headed Gulls and Mallards. I didn’t see any Mandarin Ducks. I did hear a Reed Bunting soon after arriving and did get sight of one on the far side of the pond. It could be a juvenile or possibly a male adult in non-breeding plumage.
A nice spot was the Stonechat on the Reeds, (Phragmites austalis).
July and there are still scruffy looking Moorhen chicks, this is quite possibly a second brood of the year. The third brood might come along late July, early August.
A large part of the area around the pond has been left wild with lots of Ragwort, Creeping Thistle, Birds Foot Trefoil and grasses. As a result there were lots of butterflies and I was pleased to catch sight of a Gatekeeper butterfly in the grass with its wings open. Small Skippers were flitting around.
There were also lots of Cinnabar Moth caterpillars munching away on the Ragwort.
