Given the title there has to be some bird photos here. There are also flowers, trees and fungi. The title is taken from the title of the “walk” conducted by Steve, the Denso Marston Nature Reserve warden.
Winter Birds
Sat 12th February 10:00am
We will be looking at what birds feed on, and show how to prep and what food to put out for birds.
Steve, in his usual style, talked about how, where, what and when to feed birds. He also seemed to really enjoy cutting up a chunk of lard, massaging a mixture of bird seed and meal worms into it and then pressing it on to a chunk of wood before hanging it up for the birds.
We then walked to the Spider Club feeding station for Steve to spread a couple of pints of bird food.
The birds seemed quiet in the morning but there were signs that Spring is on its way.
As usual tap on an image to see it in its gallery.

During the walk Steve pointed out various things. He also mentioned that three Little Grebes had been spotted so after the bird food talk and walk I stayed on the reserve and spent some time along by the river. This was when I took most of the photos. There seemed to be quite a few Goldcrest, or am I getting better at spotting them?
There were several pairs of Goosander and I spent sometime watching one pair diving. I didn’t see them with fish but was able to watch them under water swimming around.
I spotted a Little Grebe but I think it saw me at the same time and dived under and came up somewhere where I wasn’t looking. When the light was getting low and I was thinking about heading home (having got there at 10am) I spotted a Little Grebe and managed to get a couple of photos that aren’t too grainy and fuzzy.
Even though I have attended Steve’s tree ID walk a couple of times I am still useless at identifying them so I have just captioned them with “New Leaves”. Feel free to let me know what they are and I will update the captions.
