For five years now the Bradford Urban Wildlife Group, of which I am a member, have been running an annual photo competition. On Thursday 18 December Bradford Urban Wildlife Group held their Photo Competition Social at Shipley Kirkgate Centre. Having entered 3 photos, and being a member, I went along.
During the evening we looked through all the entries and had the opportunity to cast our popular vote. This vote did not count towards the results of the competition.
As usual you can tap/touch/click on an image to see it in better quality in the carousel gallery with an i for more information. And if you like what you see please click on one or more of the Share buttons at the bottom.

Having looked through the entries I was not expecting anything great for my submissions. We went through the Highly Commended and I got no mention. There was a good mix. There were some excellent photos – sharp, good composition, good lighting. There were also some not quite so good photos – a bit fuzzy, not so good composition, poor light, but the subject meant that it was certainly well worth taking the photo, showing the behaviour of wildlife in an urban environment.
I had to wait until the last – because I won. Yay!
And the winner was the Willow Warbler on Gorse, taken on a walk along the canal between Shipley and Baildon. It is opposite where Denso Marston Nature Reserve is but across the river and up by the canal.
For some reason I did not include this photo of the Willow Warbler in my blog post for Easter Weekend 2025 but did include other photos of the same bird and photos of the Sand Martins.
The photo of the Wren was the header image for my blog post of Denso Marston NR. 13 June 2025.
The Wren and Sand Martins did not get a mention in the results. There was a very nice entry from someone of a Sand Martin that had just launched into flight from the same wall near Fox Corner, Shipley.
