Reports of a Water Rail at Denso

Four days ago Steve posted on the Denso Marston Nature Reserve facebook page that he had spotted a Water Rail at the reserve, so today I went down to see if it was still there. And didn’t take my binoculars.

As usual click/tap on an image to see it larger.

After watching a couple of Goosander and Crows on the rocks opposite the gate I went round to the pond where this Grey Heron was quietly waiting for something to eat.

Though you can still see through most of the trees there are plenty of signs that new growth is on its way.

After quietly wandering around the reserve watching Mallards mating, Moorhen pulling muddy shirts around to get at food, Great Spotted Woodpecker both feeding and drumming, Wrens signing like mad I met up with three people looking across the river. Without my binoculars I couldn’t see anything of interest but they told me there was a Water Rail. Looking across the river with my camera brightened things up so I was able to find it. Considering how dark it was, especially in amongst the rocks by the river, I am quite pleased with the results.

While watching the Water Rail, which was very difficult to see amongst the big rocks three Roe Deer ran back and forth a couple of times.
