I watched BBC Autumn Watch last week and as a result I looked at some of the leaves on the ground when I was out today. I saw quite a few with green patches on them and took one home.
I didn’t do anything fancy. I took a couple of photos of the leaf with it on a piece of paper that was resting above the torch of my phone. And there is the little critter, munching away inside the leaf. The caterpillar has Wolbachia bacteria in its gut that release hormones that keep the chlorophyll in the leaf green so the caterpillar can keep eating it. Amazing. You can see that the caterpillar started off in a narrow space and then grew fatter as it crawled along.
