This tree in the centre of the upper part of Robert’s Park is apparently rotten in the middle and is destined to be pulled down – note: pulled down because it is so rotten and not felled.
It is quite close to the North shelter and has a couple of paths near it. The staff in the park have put Footpath Closed signs out and at one time had tape closing off the paths. I wonder what people think a sign saying Footpath Closed means? All sorts of things could be going through a person’s mind.
- I see the sign but I am master of my own fate and take full responsibility for my actions (even though I don’t know the danger.
- I see the sign and realise I am taking a risk but I won’t get too badly hurt and I can then sue the Council
- School kids have been playing a prank
- The sign is only to let me know there might be a bit of water and my shoes might get wet
- I can’t hear any machinery/saws/diggers. It must be safe.
Actually I see these people in the park regularly and I am sure they have heard about the tree from the park staff and realise that they are taking minimal risk. If it was blowing a gale they might have thought about going a different way. Don’t tell anyone but I have done the same; after all, you have to take risks when you are looking for Redwing.
