Birding at Howdendyke Island mud

Last weekend we went to Howden and on Saturday afternoon, latish, I went out to look for birds along the River Ouse. Howdendyke and Howdendyke Island are on the other side of the M62 from Howden. Most of my walking is done on Baildon Moor or similar so it was a bit strange to be walking along Howdendyke Road over the M62.

Howdendyke Island was for sale in 2009 for £100,000 but I don’t know if there were any takers. I think any owner would have trouble getting planning permission for any property on there.

At low tide the river flows round the South side of the island and mud between the island and the North bank is uncovered for birds to make the most of. Of course all the birds were as far away as they could be, next to the island; but there quite a few of them.

I like how the birds appear in layers.
