Ones missed from January

Just a few photos from our garden taken in January.

As usual you can tap/touch/click on an image, not its caption, to see it in better quality in the gallery. You can also leave comments or subscribe to the site – leave your email address and you will get notified when I publish something new.

Bullfinch, Redwing, Blackbird and Robin

As the buds on the flowering cherry tree were starting to show themselves we had a pair of Bullfinch wander along the branches nipping out each bud as they came to it. The header image is of the male with its beak full of bud fragments. In previous years I have seen them effectively doing the same thing to Crocuses, nipping out the centre of each flower.

This year a Redwing has been a frequent morning visitor to our garden. In the past we have had Redwing in the garden but they tended to keep themselves well hidden. This year we have had one that has been around most parts of the garden. Admittedly after a major trimming of some of our overgrown plants there is less for the bird to hide behind.

The Blackbirds like eating our old apples and peck at them quite a bit before a Squirrel will come along and take the apple off somewhere to eat.

I don’t know what it is that the Robins see but they sit up in the tree watching the ground and then quickly fly down, peck at something and fly back up. Presumably they have caught some tiny insect.
